If you can’t make it to Western North Carolina for hiking and scenic views, I have a great alternative in Western Gaston County.
Yeah, I know the North Carolina mountain region is the leading region for nature trails and wilderness activity. I would love to hike in that area all the time, but unfortunately, sometimes we can’t make a visit that way work.

Especially from the Southern Piedmont region, where it could take us a two-hour car trip to get to, let’s say, the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Blue Ridge Mountains, we might think that is too far away.
Did you know that there are many mountain summits closer to individuals living in the Charlotte Metro Area that offer hiking and panoramic views that rival anything in the Appalachian Mountains?
Well, in my opinion, which you should absolutely respect. <Laughing Emoji>😂
Crowders Mountain State Park
Crowders Mountain State Park is one of North Carolina’s 41 State Parks and is a popular, dope destination in Western Gaston County, about 32 miles from Charlotte.
Known for its two peaks, Crowders Mountain and The Pinnacle, and outdoor activities like easy to strenuous hiking, backpacking, camping, and rock climbing at Crowders Mountain Peak only, make Crowders a great alternative to the mountains.
This is just not in my opinion, because it turns out that Crowders is one of North Carolina’s top ten most visited state parks.

Around 800,000 individuals visited Crowders Mountain State Park in 2025, making it the seventh-most-visited state park among the 41 state parks. (https://www.ncparks.gov/state-parks/annual-visitation)
Eleven trails meander through the 5,300-acre state park and connect the two peaks. I’ve hiked three out of them this year, with The Pinnacle Trail currently my favorite.
I highly recommend The Pinnacle Trail. It’s a hip, hip, trail.

Ranking the 3 Crowders Mountain State Park Trails I’ve hiked.
1) The Pinnacle Trail
2) Tower Trail
3) Backside Trail
You really can’t go wrong with any of these three trails, but I would hike them in this order. I have 8 more to trek and will update this list as that happens. I’m really hyped to do the Ridgeline Trail, but it’s a 6.2-mile one-way, so that one will have to happen later.
I’m slowly getting back into hiking shape.
Have you been to Crowders Mountain State Park before? If so, what did you think? What are your favorite trails or trails?
But if not, let me know what you think after visiting the State Park? Is Crowders Mountain State Park a great alternative to hiking in the North Carolina Mountains?
I know we’d all rather be up there in the higher elevation, but sometimes it’s unfeasible.Â
