How many times do we have to watch this episode where the cute kid turns seven? This is when the TV dad puts the birthday cake on the table, and then the camera cuts to a wide shot of the entire TV family. Now, cue the song.”
“Happy birthday to you!” comes through the television soundbar.
Then, the subtitle “Alles Gute zum Geburtstag” appears, centered at the
bottom of the screen, which translates to “Happy birthday to you!” in German.
About those German subtitles. Here’s the thing: we always watch shows with the kids with German subtitles turned on.
I tried to explain to our four-year-old daughter that our German Shepherd,
Nani, isn’t actually German, and dogs can’t read, so subtitles in that
language aren’t necessary. But she insists Nani needs to understand
what’s going on when we watch TV as a family, and we can’t argue that
with our little girl.
