Sometimes it takes a few times hearing a song on the radio to realize it’s a cover, and then a few more listens to place the original. At least remember enough of the original music to do a proper internet search. Such as this new Weeknd song, where I finally pinpointed the original back to my college years and featured P. Diddy. Yes, I still tune into the radio and am a little bit old.
I’ve learned that this cover is called “Creepin” by Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, and 21 Savage. The song is a single from producer Metro Boomin’s second album, Heroes and Villains, and was released in December 2022.
The original was “I Don’t Wanna Know” by R&B artist Mario Winans featuring P. Diddy and Enya, released in 2004. I remember friends back then having Winan’s version on burnt CDs. Yes, I loved burning a playlist to disc on Itunes.
“I Don’t Wanna Know” was the second song that crossed my ears, produced with a sample of Enya’s Boadicea. The first was The Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” a track off their Score album released in 1996.
The Boadicea samples in both these songs sound exactly like what Enya released in the late eighties. They’re carbon copies or match close enough for my musically untrained ears. The legal trouble that the Fugees got into for using this sample should corroborate the resemblance.
Now I believe “Creepin” is the third. The melody and rhythm seem to be the same as Enya’s. Someone reproduced her vocal percussion. The sound waves are close to the Decepticons. Sorry, bad joke.
Since it’s a cover, the tones should mimic the Mario and P. Diddy track. It is enough of an interpolation to become the third song I’m aware of that was produced with Enya’s Boadicea. Right?
Boadicea is a very striking and ominous-sounding score. But also sharp and pretty. Sampling one of Enya’s masterpieces clearly elevated all the songs I mentioned in this post. Good music in should hopefully mean good music out. Only sometimes. Yes, I sometimes listen to Enya.
