This post is not the New York Times Connection word game, but what do Pat Sajak, Vanna White, a long-running game show, and Spin the Wheel have in common?
“Jeopardy?”
“Naw.”
“It’s the Wheel of Fortune”
“Yes-yes-yes.”
I didn’t know this, but the Wheel of Fortune first premiered in 1975, and Sajak and White have been hosting it since the early eighties.
Since then, this syndicated game show has become one of history’s most popular. In my opinion, it is right up there with Jeopardy, The Price is Right, and Family Feud—all of which are great, by the way.
Wheel of Fortune is a word puzzle game that works much like Hangman. Three contestants compete against each other. They spin the wheel, guess a consonant, or buy vowels until enough letters are revealed for one of them to solve the puzzle. Contestants receive the money on where the wheel lands for the number of consonants called out. Each continues until they misguess or spin a bankrupt or lose a turn. Each puzzle round begins with Pat giving them a category clue about the puzzle.
We’ve all played Wheel of Fortune from the comfort of our cozy couches and recliner chairs. I’ve definitely yelled at the contestants, successfully predicted when the bankrupt wedge would appear, and solved so many final puzzles. We’re all Wheel of Fortune GOATS in our home environment.
But have you ever wanted to be a real-life contestant on the Wheel of Fortune? I’ve thought about it because playing the game in person could be fun, exciting, and entertaining.
